Enjoy approximately five hours combining the sea of northern Amami Oshima with a hands-on dyeing experience using colors derived from island plants.
At the small AMAITO dyeing studio, use natural dyes such as fukugi and indigo to color your own cloth. Then travel through sugarcane fields and village scenery to Tomori Beach, known for its white sand and deep blue water.
The experience connects the craft with the plants that produce its colors, the landscape in which they grow, daily island life, and the coast.
Your guide, Nana Tamaki, moved to Amami through biological research and has developed a growing interest in the island's local culture. She helps connect the craft with the natural and cultural landscape around it.
体験の特徴
Fukugi is an evergreen tree historically planted around villages in Amami and Okinawa to shelter homes from typhoons and fires. Boiling its green leaves produces a surprisingly vivid yellow dye. At AMAITO, enjoy combinations of fukugi yellow and indigo blue, layered greens and gradients. You can bring not only new fabric but also a favorite, well-worn T-shirt or cloth to renew with color. Through the hands-on process, discover how a familiar tree can both protect villages and produce beautiful dyes.

The experience continues when you leave the dyeing workshop with your newly colored fabric.
Walk past sugarcane fields and small settlements to Tomori Beach, then rinse the cloth in the sea to complete it. Taking colors from island plants all the way to Amami's coast is a defining part of the experience.
Island communities have long made use of plants growing around them. Fukugi, planted to shelter homes from typhoons and fire, can also produce a vivid yellow dye when boiled.
Experience the surprise of creating color from a familiar tree with your own hands, then encounter the landscape and community where it grows before washing your fabric by the sea. Nature, daily life, craftsmanship and coastline are closely connected.
Nana Tamaki moved to Amami through biological research and continues to study local island culture. Her stories give the fabric a lasting connection to time spent here, rather than making it simply a dyed souvenir.
English-language guiding also allows international visitors to ask questions about the plants, craft and everyday island life.
