Yamato Village (Naon and local scenic sites)

Kanmura Botanical Dyeing & Scenic Tour (English Available)

Experience botanical dyeing using island plants at Kanmura Dyeing in the Naon community of Yamato Village. Dye clothing you bring with indigo, fukugi, or sharinbai, and visit beaches and waterfalls while discovering local textile traditions and village scenery.

この体験について

Visit the Naon settlement near the western edge of Yamato Village for approximately eight to nine hours of plant dyeing, village scenery, and natural landscapes.

Set between steep mountains and a coral-fringed sea, Naon is crossed by the clear Naon River. Here you will find the small Kanmura Dyeing studio. Working with a craftsperson trained in Oshima Tsumugi dyeing techniques, use materials such as indigo, fukugi, and Japanese hawthorn to dye clothing or fabric items that you bring yourself.

The day goes beyond the studio. Depending on the weather and your preferences, you may also visit beaches, waterfalls, or other places in Yamato Village.

With guide Nana Tamaki, explore the close relationship between Amami's plants, craftsmanship, settlements, mountains, and sea.

体験の特徴

The dyes used at Kanmura connect to Amami’s textile traditions. In particular, sharinbai, called “techi” in the local dialect, is used for the initial reddish-brown dyeing stage in traditional Amami Oshima Tsumugi silk weaving. Iron in the mud then reacts with the dye to produce the textile’s distinctive deep blackish-brown color. In this workshop, explore sharinbai alongside yellow from fukugi and blue from indigo, consulting the craftsperson to find the colors you prefer. Learn about the plants and skills behind traditional dyeing while applying them more freely to a piece of your own clothing.

この体験の魅力

Naon, home to the dyeing workshop, is a small settlement nestled against steep hills. Above it is a ritual site known as a tera, and the harvest festival has preserved religious rites traditionally performed by female priests called noro.

Here, dyeing cloth using water from the Naon River and colors derived from island plants is a way to discover more than a craft: it offers a glimpse of village life in which nature, prayer and handwork are closely intertwined.

Nana Tamaki moved to Amami through biological research and has been deepening her understanding of local culture. She connects the craftsperson's skills to the land, exploring why particular plants grow here and how communities have lived with their environment.

Guiding in English allows visitors from abroad to discuss dyeing techniques and village traditions as part of the experience.

On the journey to or from Naon, visit parts of Yamato Village such as Kuninao Beach, Miyakozaki or Materiya Falls according to weather and your wishes.

Stops are adjusted to conditions and participants' preferences.
