Kinsakubaru Subtropical Forest Nature Tour (English Available)
Walk through Kinsakubaru's subtropical forest, where tree ferns and epiphytic plants flourish. Learn about the forest's origins and regeneration while experiencing the passage of time and Amami's rich ecosystem.
この体験について
Walk through the subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest of Kinsakubaru in central Amami Oshima on a guided nature observation tour.
Observe plants characteristic of subtropical forests, including tree ferns, epiphytes, and other ferns, while learning how the forest developed and how its environment supports wildlife.
Your guide is Shusaku Takahashi, a former Ministry of the Environment Active Ranger who worked on national park management, World Natural Heritage-related activities, and wildlife surveys in Amami. Go beyond admiring the scenery to explore why this forest has survived here.
体験の特徴
Kinsakubaru is one of Amami Oshima’s best-known subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests. Walk slowly among spreading tree ferns, smaller ferns and plants growing on tree trunks. Shusaku Takahashi points out more than plant names. He compares places affected by logging or typhoons with areas that have matured over much longer periods, revealing how forests change, recover and develop. Even where the greenery looks similar at first glance, differences in tree size, vegetation and light show how each part of the forest has its own history.

この体験の魅力
This experience goes beyond discovering that Amami has unusual plants.
Why does Amami Oshima retain such rich ecosystems that it has been recognized as World Natural Heritage? Its landforms, plentiful rain, the long history of its forests and the relationship between people and nature all play a part.
Walk with Shusaku Takahashi, who studied environmental education at university and worked in conservation as a Ministry of the Environment Active Ranger. In the scenery before you, consider how forests develop and how environmental changes affect plants and wildlife.
As previously unnoticed differences become visible, Kinsakubaru transforms from merely a beautiful forest into a living ecosystem shaped over a long time.
