Head into the forest after sunset on an approximately three-hour private night tour to look for Amami rabbits and other nocturnal wildlife.
One reason Amami Oshima received World Natural Heritage status is the survival of numerous rare and endemic species found nowhere else. Nighttime, when many animals that are difficult to spot by day become active, offers a special opportunity to experience that natural value.
Explore the forest with Shusaku Takahashi, a former Ministry of the Environment Active Ranger who has also helped monitor Amami rabbits. Learn about observation techniques, animal behavior, and the forest environment as you travel through Amami after dark.
体験の特徴
This is a private tour for one group. Drive slowly through the forest after dark, looking for Amami rabbits, frogs, snakes and other wildlife present that night. Guide Shusaku Takahashi explains not just each animal’s name but its habitat and why Amami has so many endemic species. Clear weather may bring a starry sky; rainy nights can also be rewarding, with creatures that thrive in wet conditions. Enjoy the particular nature of the night rather than expecting a fixed list of animals.

The special value of this tour is not simply finding rare creatures, but discovering in the night forest why Amami Oshima is recognized as World Natural Heritage.
As a Ministry of the Environment Active Ranger, Shusaku Takahashi worked in national park management, World Natural Heritage-related activities and wildlife monitoring. He uses that experience to broaden the focus from individual animals to the forests, water and island environment that sustain them.
The forest, seemingly still by day, takes on another character at night. Witnessing that change and learning about habitats that support endemic species may change how you see Amami's natural world.
ガイド紹介
髙橋 周作（たかはし しゅうさく）
奄美群島認定エコツアーガイド／キョラモンガイドツアー
秋田県出身。2014年、企業の島おこしインターンで初めて奄美大島を訪れ、自然の雄大さや人の温かさに魅了される。
東京学芸大学で環境教育を専攻。2017年の卒業後、環境省の自然保護官補佐（アクティブレンジャー）として奄美大島へ移住し、国立公園の管理・運営、世界自然遺産登録に関する業務、生き物のモニタリング調査、地元の小・中学校での環境教育などに携わる。
2020年からマングローブカヌーガイドとして経験を重ね、4年間で5,000組以上を案内。奄美群島認定エコツアーガイド資格を取得し、2024年に「キョラモンガイドツアー」を開業。
一人ひとりの希望や、その日の自然条件に合わせて、奄美を好きになり「また来たい」と思ってもらえる時間をつくることを大切にしています。
自分自身が奄美の自然と人に惹かれて住みついた経験があるからこそ、名所を案内するだけでなく、「奄美ってこんなに面白かったんだ」と感じてもらえる体験を目指しています。
