Your destination is Amami Nature Observation Forest, part of the Amami Islands National Park visitor facilities in Tatsugo. Enjoy the views while riding on paved roads, then park the bicycle and walk the forest trails.
The tour is not simply about finding rare birds or plants. With guide Nana Tamaki, who studied biology and moved to Amami through research, observe vegetation, birds, terrain, and seasonal changes to consider why this natural environment has survived here.
Continue to a viewpoint overlooking Tatsugo Bay. Cycling, nature observation, and coastal scenery come together in a half day that explores the stories behind what you see.
体験の特徴
Amami Nature Observation Forest lies within a Class I Special Zone of Amami Gunto National Park. Walk along forest trails looking for island plants, birds and insects. Wildlife and scenery change with the seasons, and early-year hikan-zakura cherries may bloom around January to February. Guide Nana Tamaki is a certified Amami ecotour guide with a background in biological research. She explains not only what an organism is called but why particular plants grow here, what habitats birds need and how forest, sea and island life connect. The e-bike ride on paved roads is part of the experience, with electric assistance on hills; in the forest, slow down and stop wherever nature catches your attention. The tour follows the rhythm of the day rather than rushing along a fixed route.

Nana Tamaki first came to Amami through biological research and, captivated by its nature, moved here in 2018. Her interests now extend to island lifestyles and local culture.
Stop when you hear birdsong. Look at tree shapes and seasonal change. As the view opens toward the sea, discover relationships between forest ecosystems and the people who live here.
Over time, the forest becomes more than a beautiful green place: you begin to notice the many interacting forms of life and conditions supporting it.
Nana also offers tours in English, so non-Japanese-speaking travelers can ask their questions and explore these connections through conversation.
Walk in the woods, cycle through the landscape on an e-bike and finish with a view of Tatsugo Bay. Understanding why these habitats exist makes the forest feel more familiar and meaningful.

Sun exposure is strong from March to November, so bring thorough sun protection, including a hat and sunglasses. December to March: a windbreaker is required to protect against cold northerly winds.
