Enjoy an approximately three-hour nature tour combining mangrove canoeing with visits to wild modama vines and Funangyo Waterfall. With a former active ranger as your guide, follow the flow of water through forests, waterfalls, and brackish areas while exploring Amami's changing mangrove environment.

Explore the mangroves of Sumiyo by canoe and walk to the native modama vine habitat and Funangyo Falls on an approximately three-hour nature tour.
Water is the thread connecting these places. Rainfall stored in Amami's mountains flows through forests and waterfalls, passes valleys where modama vines grow, and reaches the sea through brackish mangrove waterways. Former Ministry of the Environment Active Ranger Shusaku Takahashi helps you follow these connections in the landscape itself.
In the mangroves, conditions change with the tide: at high tide you may paddle through tunnels of mangrove trees; at low tide you may observe creatures living on exposed mudflats. This is an opportunity to experience how Amami's forests, waterfalls, rivers, and sea are linked.

Mangroves grow in brackish areas where salt and fresh water meet. Their scenery changes with the tides; on mudflats, look for small creatures such as fiddler crabs and mudskippers. At the native modama habitat, see climbing vines that produce huge beans. Continue to Funangyo Falls to see mountain rainfall flow along streams and down a waterfall. Shusaku Takahashi connects these sites through the movement of water, telling a single story about Amami’s rain, landforms, forests and wildlife that may otherwise be difficult to notice.

The unique appeal of this tour is experiencing mangroves, giant modama vines and a waterfall as parts of one story—the abundance of water in Amami.
Shusaku Takahashi studied environmental education at university and worked as a Ministry of the Environment Active Ranger on national parks, World Natural Heritage activities and wildlife surveys. Rather than simply naming species, he explains why particular habitats exist and how water travels through the landscape, using the scenery in front of you.
Funangyo Falls and nearby forests also reflect connections between nature, local beliefs and everyday life. Seeing culture and the environment together adds depth to a half-day of exploration.

髙橋 周作（たかはし しゅうさく）
奄美群島認定エコツアーガイド／キョラモンガイドツアー
秋田県出身。2014年、企業の島おこしインターンで初めて奄美大島を訪れ、自然の雄大さや人の温かさに魅了される。
東京学芸大学で環境教育を専攻。2017年の卒業後、環境省の自然保護官補佐（アクティブレンジャー）として奄美大島へ移住し、国立公園の管理・運営、世界自然遺産登録に関する業務、生き物のモニタリング調査、地元の小・中学校での環境教育などに携わる。
2020年からマングローブカヌーガイドとして経験を重ね、4年間で5,000組以上を案内。奄美群島認定エコツアーガイド資格を取得し、2024年に「キョラモンガイドツアー」を開業。
一人ひとりの希望や、その日の自然条件に合わせて、奄美を好きになり「また来たい」と思ってもらえる時間をつくることを大切にしています。
自分自身が奄美の自然と人に惹かれて住みついた経験があるからこそ、名所を案内するだけでなく、「奄美ってこんなに面白かったんだ」と感じてもらえる体験を目指しています。

For canoeing, wear comfortable clothes that can get wet; quick-drying, skin-covering clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt or rash guard is recommended. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the modama habitat and waterfall walks.
