Sumiyo Mangrove Forest and Kinsakubaru, Naze

Amami Mangrove Canoeing & Kinsakubaru Forest Nature Tour (English Available)

Explore both the mangroves of Sumiyo and the subtropical broadleaf forest of Kinsakubaru. With a former active ranger, discover the connections between brackish-water forests and mature inland forests through water, forest history, and biodiversity.

この体験について

Connect Amami's waterways and forests on a nature tour combining a canoe trip through the mangroves of Sumiyo with a walk in the subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest of Kinsakubaru.

One landscape is a brackish mangrove forest where freshwater meets the sea; the other is a mature inland forest. Visiting both reveals the striking diversity of habitats on this relatively small island.

Your guide is Shusaku Takahashi, a former Ministry of the Environment Active Ranger involved in national park management, World Natural Heritage-related work, and wildlife surveys on Amami. Rather than simply visiting famous sites, explore the reasons these ecosystems have survived.

体験の特徴

Kinsakubaru is a subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest in central Amami Oshima. Walk among large tree ferns, epiphytes and other ferns to observe mature woodland. Shusaku Takahashi also draws attention to places changed by earlier logging or typhoons, comparing them with areas that have matured over a long period. The differences reveal how forests are damaged, recover and develop with time. In the mangroves you encounter tides and moving water; at Kinsakubaru you explore the timescale of the forest. Experiencing both gives a broader perspective on Amami’s biodiversity.

この体験の魅力

This tour invites you to discover more than the fact that Amami has unusual natural habitats.

Why has such extraordinary diversity of wildlife survived here, earning World Natural Heritage recognition? Part of the answer lies in the island's landforms, abundant rain, the long development of its forests and interactions with people.

Shusaku Takahashi has worked in nature conservation for the Ministry of the Environment and studied environmental education. Comparing the contrasting landscapes of mangroves and Kinsakubaru, he explores questions such as how forests form and how water and wildlife are connected.

Places that might otherwise look like the same green forest become habitats with different histories, environments and ecological rhythms.
